Empowering Latin American higher education for STEM inclusion and attractiveness

WHAT IS ELA4ATTRACT?

Through ELA4ATTRACT we seek to foster, promote and implement best practices that enhance the ability to attract, recruit and retain domestic and international students seeking bachelor's and master's degrees in STEM areas, with a gender focus so that more women will consider a career in these fields.

This project seeks to promote equal opportunity and address historical and systemic barriers to access for underrepresented groups, such as women, low-income people, ethnic minorities and rural communities.

Organizing interactive activities and encouraging discussion and knowledge sharing on strategies to attract students to STEM.

Fostering a safe space for learning and open dialogue to discuss issues related to diversity in STEM.

Promoting equal opportunity and addressing historical and systemic barriers to access for underrepresented groups, such as women, low-income people, ethnic minorities and rural communities.

Providing universities and stakeholders with the ability to attract and retain an increasing number of degree-seeking students, both domestic and international, in their local communities.

Objectives

  • Detailed analysis of applications in STEM fields in selected countries in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean by gender and, if available, by subregion within each country.
  • Review of strategies to attract students to STEM fields at the national and university levels. Includes a review of the scientific literature, local policies and governmental studies of the last decade, and interviews with deans, program directors and secretaries of education.
  • Selection of good practices at different levels (government, university, program) based on a comparative analysis of the practices found and the development of rubrics created for this purpose.
  • Create a train-the-trainer program (faculty and staff) to build staff capacity in strategic recruitment, marketing, inclusion and cultural challenges.
  • Develop a roadmap (digital guide) to support staff to increase efficiency, improve performance and achieve happier, more integrated students.
  • Create and implement initiatives that result in innovative experiences for attraction and inclusion.
    Implement and test the short-term impact of two practices that are believed to work in different contexts.
  • Create an online tool to map and compare international recruitment processes in Higher Education.
  • Disseminate the results in different forums and create open access digital material in English and Spanish with the key results of the project.
